With the bun sitting heavy in my stomach I was finding it hard to fall asleep. I kept picturing the gathering of witches in the basement below the flower shop below the apartment I was lying in. Layers of wood and carpet separating us, thick concrete barriers keeping us apart but holding the whole scrying ceremony together. Clearly, my mind was still whirring like an engine as I was thinking of everything other than falling asleep.

I thought about Rita lying alone in her house, how much she must be struggling to sleep under the circumstances. It only made my mind more active.

“Did you know I’m basically a doctor?” Ren asked. He was curled up on the pillow beside me and clearly finding my tossing and turning to be too jarring to drift off to.

“A doctor?”

“Yes. You see, there is a complicated and magnificent truth to the majestic, domestic cat. Our purr...” Ren began. “Humans have used our purr for centuries to heal, the frequency is able to promote bone growth, heal bone fractures and lower the pain in...” It was like magic. The magic of an incredibly boring story causing me to fall asleep.

Ren was perhaps much smarter than I had previously given him credit for. I hadn’t needed him to talk for long, the distraction of his story had allowed the business in my head to fall silent long enough that I could relax. I could instantly feel the resistance that my mom had warned me about.

The last scry dream I had experienced had involved a witch that was dead and had consented to the vision. This dream involved a witch that was very much alive and no doubt trying to keep secrets from us. It was like the nightmares you have of trying to run but not picking up any speed. I was moving so slowly, despite my efforts, to get to the start of a memory. She knew I was watching this.

Just like before, I was placed in the vicinity of past events. I was watching Evelyn load a silver canoe onto a trailer connected to her car. Another difference between this scry and my previous attempt, Evelyn was interacting with me.

“What exactly is it that you all think I’ve done?” she smirked as she tightened the ropes. “You have the whole coven working against me, a woman who has lost her husband, and for what? A chance to replay my last moments with my beloved? You can’t let me have these moments as private memories?”

“I am doing this for Rita,” I tried to say. No words left my mouth. I felt as though I didn’t have the power to control any aspect of what was happening, Evelyn was very much in charge.

She got into her car and began to drive down the road. There was a car in front, and it was towing the boat that had crashed into the police boat on the lake. She was following her husband down to the boat ramp. I could feel something pushing me out of the car, an unseen force.
